    Description

Antique Beaded Buckskin Double-Sided Pouch American Plains or Ojibwe Circa 1890
Antique Beaded Buckskin Double-Sided Pouch American Plains or Ojibwe Circa 1890. This is a beautifully hand sewn buckskin and hand beaded double-sided pouch, purse or tobacco bag with multi-colored beads arranged in two different floral patterns on each side with a twisted buckskin  drawstring at the top.
All around the edge, the purse  has a reinforced edge of lighter colored buckskin, and has fringe all around it.
I believe it to be Plains Native American, and it is likely made by someone from the Ojibwe tribe of Minnesota, as it looks most like other Ojibwe tribe tobacco bags from the late 19th century.  There are a few other tribes that had some similar bags as well, the Cree tribe, Tuscarora Tribe, as well as the Tanana Tribe. The floral motif on each side are in a typical Victorian style of floral arrangements of the pansy flower, and this is, along with the aged aspect of the buckskin are how I came to the attribution of the late 19th/ early 20th century date.  In Victorian England the US at that time, the pansy had an association of romantic love. This may have been made for a sweetheart. I love the combination of the tribal style with the encounter of the European floral style.
