1930s NATIVE AMERICAN PLAINS / SIOUX INDIAN HIDE POSSIBLE BAG / DISPATCH POUCH

Description

This beautiful early 20th century Sioux Pouch / Flat Bag measures approx. 7 3/4" wide and 4 3/4" long (included the beaded hide fringe). The body of the Bag is made of a “hair-on” cow hide with brain tanned false flap and border. The flap and border feature bead decoration using colors of red white-heart, medium blue, red, periwinkle and chalk white. The upper corners of the Bag have tin cone drops with red dyed, horse hair tufts. The bag is lined with a muslin type canvas fabric.

This rare and very attractive, ca1930’s Sioux Bead Decorated Possible / Dispatch Bag is in very good condition. The hide elements are well preserved with no damage of any kinds. There are what appear to be repairs to splits in the hide – one on the front and one on the back – it is hard to tell if this was done at the time the Bag was originally made or at a later time. The beadwork is very well preserved with no loss or damage as can be seen in the scans below. One of the upper corners of the Bag has 2 tin cone drops and the other corner has one so we assume that one tin cone drop is lacking. Overall the Pouch is well preserved and displays nicely.
